Greening the Governors' Global Climate Summit

The planning team for the Governors’ Global Climate Summit2 has made a commitment to sustainability for the event. We take into consideration many areas of conference planning and have implemented goals and initiatives to create a more sustainable event.

A few of our initiatives are listed below:

Cutting Back on Paper Waste

  • Use 100% post consumer recycled paper and paper products only
  • Distribute electronic event invitations and registration process
  • Use less paper in the planning process
  • Provide recycling containers and sort all waste for recycling and/or reuse
  • Use non-disposable catering plates, cups and glasses
  • Use cloth napkins or reusable coasters when possible
  • Use screens to replace traditional signage
  • Provide Summit materials on USB drive instead of paper
  • Shrink the event program and print on non-toxic, post-consumer, recycled paper

Sustainable Food Practices

  • Collect leftover table scraps, food trimming and other compostables for recycling
  • Use predominantly locally-grown, organic food and beverages when possible
  • Serve condiments in bulk containers to eliminate waste and packaging
  • Provide leftover food to local non-profit organization when possible
  • Use shade-grown coffee only

Greening Guest Rooms

  • No automatic replacements of consumable amenities
  • Instruct staff to shut blinds, turn off lights and turn down heat/air conditioning
  • When possible, use non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning products
  • Promote towel and sheet reuse program

Clean and Efficient Energy Use

  • Purchase renewable energy from local utility to power the Summit
  • Promote energy efficiency policies throughout the event
  • Energy efficient LED lighting will be used whenever possible

Environmental Performance Accountability

  • Sustainability language is written into the venue contract
  • Hotel will support green features and meet sustainability goals and has made the unprecedented commitment to compensation concessions for missed goals

Reduce Hazardous Materials

  • Absolutely no polystyrene will be used
  • Source pens, bags or other event items with non-toxic, recycled content
  • Use cleaning products that do not introduce toxins into the air and water

Other Green Features

  • The carbon from delegate travel will be offset
  • Event will be webcast to promote virtual Summit attendees to cut down on travel
  • Summit exhibitors must comply with numerous green initiatives
